I shot this test recently in Bonaire to test various port optics. I realize it will be hard to tell details via the web, but the 2 illustration show what to expect from the Nikkor 17-35mm zoom lens with 2 different dome ports and the PVL 55 port extension. Pay special attention to the corners.
The Wide port is acceptable, but a little soft in the extreme corners. In blue water environments it will be fine, and even on most coral reefs better than most of the wide angle and dome port combinations by other manufacturers. But for optimal corner resolution, the Superdome and the PVL 55 is the ultimate answer for the 17-35 Nikkor.
With the D1X nipping off the corners due to the 1.5 magnification, even the wide port will perform wonderfully. I expect the 17-35mm, 14mm, 16mm, 60/105mm, and even the 70-180mm to be the most desirable optics for the Seacam D1 housings.
Tip: Don't forget that the 60mm Micro-Nikkor will work behind the dome ports as well. A wide port + a PVL 25 is an excellent option for fish portraits without the refraction and magnification effect of a flat port.
